Product Strategy vs North Star Framework
When I started learning PM, different knowledge areas seemed isolated islands.
So today: How do you combine Product Strategy with the North Star Framework?
First, Product Strategy.
Strategy is not a plan, a goal, or a set of actions. It’s a cohesive set of choices that reinforce each other and, as you believe, will allow you to win:
- market (problems people have)
- constraints (e.g., geography)
- value proposition
- relative costs
- key metrics
- tradeoffs
- growth
North Star Framework perfectly aligns with that. It focuses on the value customers get from your product.
We typically define the North Star Metric and a set of Input Metrics that influence it the most. I love John Cutler’s insights, who calls it a “constellation.”
North Star Framework:
- Aligns seamlessly with your value proposition
- Provides you with leading indicators of long-term business success
The only valid solution is to make the North Star constellation part of your Product Strategy.
And this might make your product unstoppable.
Hope that helps!
